wa jāhada bayna yadayk, wa našaraka alā man baghā alayk, wa fadāka birūħihi wa jasadihi wa mālihi wa waladih,
And fought before you, and helped you against those who oppressed you, and sacrificed his soul, his body, his wealth, and his children for you,
wa rūħuhu li rūħika fidā',
(Salutations from the one) whose soul is a sacrifice for yours,
wa 'ahluhu li 'ahlika wiqā',
And his family is a protection for your family,
fala'in 'akh-kharatnid-duhūr, wa āqanī an našrikal maqdūr
But as I have been hindered by the course of time and as (Allah’s) decree has prevented me from helping you,
wa lam 'akun liman ħārabaka muħāribā, wa liman našaba lakal adāwata munāšibā,
And I was not one to fight against those who fought you, nor one to oppose those who displayed enmity towards you,
So I shall lament for you morning and evening, and I shall weep blood instead of tears for you, in sorrow for you, regret over what befell you, and anguish,
Ħattā 'amūta bilawatil mušāb wa ghuššatil 'ikti'yāb,
Until I die from the burning anguish of the tragedy and the choking of grief,
'ash-hadu 'annaka qad 'aqamtaš-šalāt, wa ātaytaz-zakāt,
I bear witness that you established the prayer and gave the Zakat,
wa 'amarta bil marūf, wa nahayta anil munkari wal udwān,
And you enjoined good and forbade evil, and aggression,
wa 'aţatal-lāha wa mā ašaytah, wa tamassakta bihi wa bi ħablih,
And you obeyed Allah and did not disobey Him, and you held fast to Him and His rope,
fa 'arđhaytahu wa khashaytahu wa rāqabtahu wastajabtah,
Then, you pleased Him, held Him in awe, were attentive towards Him, and were responsive to Him,
wa sanantas-sunan, wa 'aţfa'tal fitan,
And you established the traditions and extinguished seditions,
wa daawta 'ilar-rashād, wa 'awđhaħta subulas-sadād, wa jāhadta fil-lāhi ħaqqal jihād,
And you called towards guidance and clarified the paths, and you struggled for Allah as is His due,
wa kunta lil-lāhi ţā'iā,
You were an obedient one to Allah,
wali jaddika muħammadin šallal-lāhu alayhi wa ālihi tābiā,
And following your grandfather Muhammad, may Allah bless him,
wali qawli 'abīka sāmiā,
And listening to the words of your father,
wa 'ilā waššiyyati 'akhīka musāriā,
And hastening towards the will of your brother,
wali imādid-dīni rāfiā, wa liţ-ţughyāni qāmiā,
And raising the pillar of religion and crushing tyranny,
wa liţ-ţughāti muqāriā, wa lil 'ummati nāšiħā,
And fighting the tyrants and advising the nation,
wa fī ghamarātil mawti sābiħā,
And swimming through the floods of death,
wa lil fussāqi mukāfiħā, wa bi-ħujajil-lāhi qā'imā,
And combating the transgressors, standing firm with Allah's proofs,
wa lil 'islāmi wal muslimīna rāħimā,
And being merciful to Islam and the Muslims,
wa lil ħaqqi nāširā, wa indal balā'i šābirā,
And aiding the truth and being patient in trial,
wa liddīni kāli'ā, wa an ħawzatihi murāmiyā,
And guarding the religion and defending its sanctity,
taħūţul hudā wa tanšuruh,
You safeguarded the right path and supported it,
wa tabsuţul adla wa tanshuruh,
And you spread justice and propagated it,
wa tanšurud-dīna wa tuđhiruh,
And you aid the religion and make it manifest,
wa takkufful ābitha wa tazjuruh,
And you restrain the mischief-maker and rebuke him,
wa ta'khudhu lid-daniyyi minash-sharīf,
And you take for the lowly from the noble,
wa tusāwī fil ħukmi baynal qawiyyi wađh-đhaīf,
And you judge equally between the strong and the weak,
kunta rabīal 'aytām, wa išmatal 'anām, wa izzal 'islām,
You were the springtime of the orphans, the protection of humanity, the glory of Islam,
wa madinal 'aħkām wa ħalīfal 'inām,
And the mine of judgments and the ally of bounties,
sālikan ţarā'iqa jaddika wa 'abīk,
You pursued the path of your grandfather and your father,
mushbihan fil wašiyyati li 'akhīk,
Resembling your brother in his testament,
wafiyyadh-dhimam, rađhiyyash-shiyam
Faithful to trusts, pleasing in character,
Đāhiral karam, mutahajjidan fiđ-đulam,
Manifest in generosity, praying (tahajjud) in the darkness of the night,
qawīmaţ-ţarā'iq, karīmal khalā'iq, ađīmas-sawābiq,
You were the straightest path, the most generous of the creation, and had the brightest record.
sharīfan-nasab, munīfal ħasab, rafīar-rutab,
You were of great ancestry, noble descent, and lofty rank.
kathīral manāqib, maħmūdađh-đharā'ib, jazīlal mawāhib,
You possessed plentiful merits, praiseworthy manners, and were abundant in endowments.
Ħalīmun rashīdun munīb, jawādun alīmun shadīd,
Forbearing, wise, penitent, generous, learned, and severe (against the enemies),
'imāmun shahīd, 'awwāhun munīb, ħabībun mahīb,
An Imam who was martyred, one who sighed in prayer, penitent, beloved, and awe-inspiring,
kunta lir-rasūli šallal-lāhu alayhi wa ālihi waladā,
You were to the Messenger, peace be upon him and his family, a son,
wa lil qur'āni sanadā [munqidhā],
And a support and savior for the Qur'an,
wa lil 'ummati ađhudā,
And a strength for the nation,
wa fiţ-ţāati mujtahidā,
You were diligent in obedience,
Ħāfiđan lil ahdi wal mīthāq,
Guardian of the covenant and the pledge,
nākiban an subulil fussāq,
Shunning the paths of the transgressors,
`[wa] bādhilan lil majhūd,
And exerting yourself to the utmost,
Ţawīlar-rukūi was-sujūd,
One who prolonged his bowing (ruku) and prostration (sujud),
zāhidan fid-dunya zuhdar-rāħili anhā,
Abstaining in the world like one departing from it,
nāđiran 'ilayhā biaynil-mustawħishīna minhā,
Looking at it with eyes of those terrified of it,
āmāluka anhā makfūfah,
Your desires from it (the world) were abstentious,
wa himmatuka an zīnatihā mašrūfah,
And your ambition is turned from its adornment,
wa 'alħāđuka an bahjatihā maţrūfah,
And your glances are averted from its splendor,
wa raghbatuka fil ākhirati marūfah,
And your desire for the Hereafter is well-known,
Ħattā 'idhal jowru madda bāah,
Until when tyranny stretched out its hand,
wa 'asfarađ-đulmu qināah,
And when oppression lifted its veil,
wa daal ghayyu 'atbāah,
And misguidance called its followers,
wa 'anta fī ħarami jaddika qāţin,
And you resided in the sanctuary of your grandfather,
wa liđ-đālimīna mubāyin,
And separating from the oppressors,
jalīsul bayti wal miħrāb,
The companion of the house and the prayer niche,
mutazilun anil-ladh-dhāti wash-shahawāt,
Withdrawing from pleasures and desires,
tunkirul munkara biqalbika wa lisānik, alā ħasabi ţāqatika wa 'imkānik,
You denounce evil with your heart and tongue, according to your capacity and might,
thummaqtađhākal ilmu lil 'inkār,
Then the knowledge demanded you for disavowal (of falsehood),
wa lazimika 'an tujāhidal fujjār,
And it was incumbent upon you to fight the transgressors,
fasirta fī 'awlādika wa 'ahālīk, wa shīatika wa mawālīk,
Therefore, you set out in company of your children, kinsfolk, followers, and supporters,
wa šadata bil ħaqqi wal bayyinah,
And you proclaimed the truth and the clear proof,
wa daawta 'ilal-lāhi bil ħikmakti wal mawiđatil ħasanah,
And you called to Allah with wisdom and goodly exhortation,
wa 'amarta bi'iqāmatil ħudūd, waţ-ţāati lil mabūd,
And you enjoined the limits and obedience to the Worshipped,
wa nahayta anil khabā'ithi waţ-ţughyān
And you forbade vile deeds and tyranny,
wa wājahūka biđ-đulmi wal udwān,
But, they confronted you with injustice and aggression.
fa jāhadtahum badal 'īāzi lahum [al-īādi 'ilayhim] wa ta'kīdil ħujjati alayhim,
Therefore, you resisted them after advising them and stressing over (divine) proofs against them.
fanakathū dhimāmaka wa bayatak,
However, they violated your (divine) rights and oath.
wa 'askhaţu rabbaka wa jaddak,
And they angered your Lord and your grandfather,
wa bada'ūka bil ħarb,
And they initiated war against you,
fa thabatta liţ-ţani wađh-đharb,
Hence, you stood firm to spear and strike,
wa ţaħanta junūdal fujjār, waqtaħamta qasţalal ghubār,
And you crushed the armies of transgressors, plunging through dust,
mujālidan bidhil faqār, ka'annaka aliyunil mukhtār,
Struggling with Dhu'l-Fiqar, as if you were 'Ali al-Mukhtar,
fallammā ra'awka thābital jāsh, ghayra khā'ifin wa lā khāsh,
So when they saw you firm, fearless, and courageous,
našabū laka ghawā'ila makrihim, wa qātaluka bikaydihim wa sharrihim,
They set snares of deceit against you, and fought you with cunning, and their evil,
wa 'amaral-laīnu junūdahu, famanaūkal mā'a wa wurūdah,
The accursed one (Umar Ibn Sa’d) commanded his soldiers, and thus, they prevented you from reaching or receiving water.
wa nājazūkal qitāl wa ājalūkan-nizāl,
They rushed to engage you in combat, descended swiftly upon you,
wa rashaqūka bis-sihāmi wan-nibāl,
And they shot you with arrows and darts,
wa basaţū 'ilayka 'akuffal išţilām,
And they stretched out hands of aggression towards you,
wa lam yaraw laka dhimāmā, wa lā rāqabū fīka 'athāmā, fī qatlihim 'awliyā'ak, wa nahbihim riħālak,
Neither they respected your rights, nor were they mindful of retribution for slaying you and your companions, and plundering your belongings.
wa 'anta muqqaddamun fil habawāt, wa muħtamilun lil adhiyyāt,
You were in the front line of the storm (of battle), enduring afflictions.
qad ajibat min šabrika malā'ikatus-samawāt,
Indeed, the angels of the heavens were astonished by your patience.
fa 'aħdaqū bika min kullil jihāt,
The enemy then surrounded you from all sides,
wa 'ath-khanūka bil jirāħ,
And they wounded you severely,
wa ħālū baynaka wa baynar-rawāħ,
And they came between you and rest,
wa lam yabqa laka nāšir,
And no helper remained for you,
wa 'anta muħtasibun šābir,
You were bereaved yet patient,
tadhubbu an niswatika wa 'awlādik,
You were defending your women and children,
Ħattā nakasūka an jawādik,
Until they made you fall from your horse,
fa hawayta 'ilal 'arđhi jarīħā,
You fell to the ground, wounded,
taţa'ukal khuyūlu biħawāfirihā,
The horses trample you with their hooves,
wa talūkaţ-ţughātu bibawātirihā,
And the tyrants ride over you with their swords,
qad rashaħa lil mawti jabīnuk,
Indeed your forehead perspired with death's sweat,
wakhtalafat bil inqibāđhi wal inbisāţi shimāluka wa yamīnuk,
And your left and right sides alternated in contraction and expansion,
tudīru ţarfan khafiyyan 'ilā raħlika wa baytik,
You secretly cast your glance towards your saddle and tent,
wa qad shughilta binafsika an wuldika wa 'ahālīk,
And you were occupied with yourself from your children and family,
wa 'asraa farasuka shāridan, 'ilā khiyāmika qāšidan, muħamħiman bākiyā,
(At that time,) your horse distractedly galloped towards your camp, neighing and crying.
falammā ra'aynan-nisā'u jawādaka makhziyyā,
When the women saw your horse distraught,
wa nađarna sarjaka alayhi malwiyyā,
And they saw your saddle twisted upon it,
barazna minal khudūr,
They emerged from the veils,
nāshirātish-shuūr,
With their hair disheveled,
alal khudūdi lāţimātil wujūhi sāfirāt,
Striking their cheeks, their faces uncovered,
wa bil awīli dāiyāt,
And crying out with wailing,
wa badal izzi mudhallalāt,
And humiliated after honor,
wa 'ilā mašraika mubādirāt,
And hastening towards your place of martyrdom,
wash-shimru jālisun alā šadrik,
At that time Shimr (L) was sitting on your chest,
mūlighon sayfahu alā naħrik,
And one who plunges his sword into your throat,
qābiđhun alā shaybatika biyadih,
Grasping your beard in his hand,
dhābiħun laka bimuhannadih,
Slaughtering you with his Indian sword,
qad sakanat ħawāsuka,
Your faculties faded,
wa khafiyat 'anfāsuka,
And your breaths became faint,
wa rufia alal qanāti ra'suka,
And your head was raised upon the spear,
wa subiya 'ahluka kal abīd,
Your family were captured like slaves,
wa šuffidū fil ħadīdi fawqa 'aqtābil maţiyyāt,
And they were chained upon camel saddles,
talfaħu wujūhahum ħarrul hājirāt,
The midday sun's heat burns their faces,
yusāqūna fil barārī wal falawāt,
They were driven across deserts and wastelands,
'aydīhim maghlūlatun 'ilal 'anāq,
Their hands chained to their necks,
yuţāfu bihim fil 'aswāq,
They are paraded in the markets,
fal waylu lil ušātil fussāq,
Woe be unto the wicked transgressors!
laqad qatalū biqatlikal islām,
Certainly, by killing you, they have killed Islam,[1]
wa aţţaluš-šalāta waš-šiyām,
And they abandoned prayer and fasting,
wa naqađhus-sunana wal 'aħkām,
And they violated traditions and ordinances,
wa hadamū qawāidal 'īmān,
And they destroyed the foundations of faith,
wa ħarrafū āyātil qur'ān,
And they distorted the verses of the Qur'an,
wa hamlajū fil baghyi wal udwān,
And they hastened in oppression and aggression,
laqad 'ašbaħa rasūlul-lāhi šallal-lāhu alayhi wa ālihi mawtūrā,
Certainly, (by this event,) the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HF)was wronged, left alone, and denied vengeance,
wa āda kitābul-lāhi azza wa jalla mahjūrā,
And the Book of Allah became abandoned,
wa ghūdiral ħaqqu 'idh quhirta maqhūrā,
And truth was forsaken when you were vanquished,
wa fuqida bi faqdikat-takbīru wat-tahlīl,
And with your loss, the Takbir and the Tahlil were lost,
wat-taħrīmu wat-taħlīl, wat-tanzīlu wat-ta'wīl,
His prohibitions, sanctions, revelation, and interpretation were lost.
wa đahara badakat-taghyīru wat-tabdīl, wal 'ilħādu wat-taţīl, wal 'ahwā'u wal 'ađhālīl, wal fitanu wal 'abāţīl,
After you, alteration, distortion, infidelity, abandonment (of the Islamic laws), vagary, misguidance, turmoil and falsehood became prevalent.
faqāma nāīka inda qabri jaddikar-rasūli, šallal-lāhu layhi wa ālih,
The announcer of your martyrdom came near the grave of your grandfather, the Messenger (PBUH&HF),
fanaāka 'ilayhi biddamil haţūli, qā'ilan:
And announced your death to him with pouring tears, saying:
ya rasūlal-lāh, qutila sibţuka wa fatāk,
O Messenger of Allah, your grandson and your devoted one is killed,
was-tubīħa 'ahluka wa ħimāk,
And your family and your sanctuary were pillaged,
wa subiyat badaka dharārīk,
After you, your progeny were captured,
wa waqaal maħdhūru biitratika wa dhawīk,
And the feared calamity befell your progeny and kin,
fanzaajar-rasūl, wa bakā qalbuhul mahūl,
Indeed, the Messenger (PBUH&HF) became distressed and his depressed heart wept,
wa azzāhu bikal malā'ikatu wal 'anbiyā',
The Angels and the prophets offered their condolences to him for your martyrdom,
wa fujiat bika ummukaz-zahrā',
Your mother, al-Zahra, became distressed and bereft of you,
wakhtalafat junūdul malā'ikatil muqarrabīn, tuazzī 'abāka 'amīral mu'minīn,
Legions of favored Angels came in waves to offer their condolences to your father, the Leader of the Faithful,
wa 'uqīmat lakal ma'ātimu fī 'alā illiyyīn,
Mourning commemorations were held for you in the utmost exalted place Heaven,
wa laţamat alaykal ħūrul īn,
And the maidens of Paradise beat their faces over you,
wa bakatis-samā'u wa sukkānuhā,
The skies and their inhabitants wept,
wal jinānu wa khuzzānuhā,
And Paradise and its keepers,
wal hiđhābu wa 'aqţāruhā,
And the mountains and their regions,
wal biħāru wa ħītānuhā,
And the seas and their fish,
wal jinānu wa wildānuhā,
And Paradise and its young attendants,
wal baytu wal maqām,
And the House and the Station,
wal masharul ħarām,
And the Sacred Monument,
wal ħillu wal iħrām,
And the non-sacred and the sacred,
